So, you’re looking to join a research lab? Thinking about reaching out to a professor for a professional development meeting? Or maybe you’re just exploring which areas of psychology interest you?

This guide was created to help you navigate the process of getting involved in research as a Psychology (PSYC) Terp – from finding opportunities to preparing outreach emails to understanding what labs are even out there. It is designed to be a student-friendly, approachable resource that makes the process less intimidating and more achievable. By the end of this guide, you will know how to identify research labs that interest you, write effective outreach emails, and prepare for your first meeting.

Working in a research lab may sound daunting, but it actually allows you to connect with faculty, graduate students, fellow PSYC terps, and to gain hands-on experience that strengthens your academic, professional, and personal growth. Whether you’re interested in clinical psychology, neuroscience, social behavior, or data analysis, research experience opens new doors to new skills, mentorship, and a diverse community.

You can also earn PSYC479 credit if you meet the requirements for joining a lab. This particular credit doesn't satisfy a PSYC credit, but it applies to your general elective credits to get you closer to 120 credits!
