Moving forward with the research being done, it is important that we think of what efforts we, as a society, will put forth to prevent people from being negatively affected by social media. Education is the key to prevention because it allows people to wisely use social media without having to completely cut it out of their lives. It is easier for people to fall into failures in life, such as addiction or poverty, when there is a lack of education. If people are educated on social media and how to use it properly, they will be more likely to use it in a healthy way. One step we could take to educate people on what healthy use of social media looks like is to first start with young people. I think even people as young as ten years old should be educated on this since some children this age have access to social media. These young people are most important to educate since their brains are least developed and they be less able to properly navigate the world of social media and all of its implications. In school, there should be time spent educating children on what social media is and how it should be used. Teachers could discuss things such as how they should limit their time on social media and realize it is separate from the real world. They should be educated on the distinction between social media and the real world. Another aspect of education our society should consider is how to help people who are using social media in an unhealthy way before it leads to mental illness. I think one way of doing this is to make it known that this is nothing to be ashamed of and it never hurts to seek help such as counseling and therapy: there are trusted people who can help. There is still a mental health stigma in our society today that makes it seem taboo to even talk about this topic, but just as stated by Dr. Michael Bloomfield, "There is still great stigma against mental illness. And this permeates through many aspects of our lives - the media, politics, hospitals, professions and indeed patients themselves." A key part of introducing education on healthy use of social media is to first teach people that these issues need to be taken seriously and chip away at the the stigma.
