Use in Moderation
Using social media in moderation has no effect on the risk for mental health diseases since there is no way to prove that a person who uses social media once a day is less likely to be affected by the dangers than someone who uses it forty times a day. Aside from the frequency of using it, it depends on the personality of that person. Whether or not the person will develop a mental illness from using social media is usually predetermined. Using social media a lot might be dangerous for a person who is susceptible to mental illness from other factors, but social media alone is not enough to cause this. A person who uses it forty times a day but is able to distinguish that it is fake might be less affected by it than someone who is more trusting of it and uses it once a day.
Avoid Comparison
The social media platform is meant for connecting with friends and posting all the highlights of your life. If social media was 100% authentic it would be depressing and boring. Social media is a sort of outlet from the real world and anyone using social media should be able to recognize this. Also, just because a person sees someone living a great life, does not mean they will feel inferior and spiral into depression and anxiety or worse. Seeing someone succeeding could actually be a positive thing on social media. It can be a form of inspiration and many people use social media for this purpose. It can be motivation for you to try harder to achieve more in your life.
Education Leads to Prevention
While it is true that there should be education in place when discussing social media and how to use it properly, it should also be noted that social media can be used IN education and usually this covers a bit of education on how to use it too. Many universities and some lower education levels like high school, use social media as a way for the whole classroom to communicate. This can be especially useful when there is a class of many people and it can be difficult to communicate in person. Using social media in education is also a good way for students to feel they can participate if they especially struggle with speaking in front of people. Social media allows them to still have a voice. This is a positive side of social media that was not mentioned when discussing education and social media.
