1. Was produced within the timeframe of the dictatorship
This allowed us to guarantee that the music was a primary source of the history we are trying to tell. It also allows us to explore the ways these musicians hid their messages so they could bypass censorship.
2. Fit the narrative arc of our story
There are many songs that didn't make the cut for numerous reasons. Many songs weren't chosen as we felt they didn't fit the 6 act structure we made. With any dance, there is a necessity to balance research and narrative structure.
3. Lent itself to choreography
This is a very subjective category. Every choreographer has different ways of choreographing.
"I have synesthesia and see movement when listening to music. Some songs create very vivid images in my head while others only produce trails of smoke. When choreographing, especially in short time frames, I choose songs that produce strong visuals to make the process clear and move faster." -BML
Sung by Aloísio de Oliveira
"Composed in early 1939, the song heralded a new genre in Brazilian Popular Music: samba-exaltação, a samba exulting in the beauties of the land. “Aquarela do Brasil” was first performed in the theatrical revue Entra na Faixa on 16 June 1939 by the popular singer Araci Cortes. Incredible as it may seem, her rendition passed virtually unnoticed, which led the composer to overlook her when it came time to record what turned out to be his most famous song."
-Daniella Thompson & Ricardo Paoletti
This song was chosen for the Prelude due to it's simplicity and its reminiscence to propaganda songs produced by the dictatorship. It works well to introduce the audience to the setting of this piece and brings them into the world we're creating. It also sets the tone via it's natural distortion and "old-timey" feel.
Raul Seixas
"In "O Carimbador Maluco", Raul Seixas makes a direct criticism of the bureaucracy, but in a light and accessible way, using the playful universe of a children’s space adventure. The song highlights the requirement that everything be "sealed, registered, stamped, evaluated, labeled if you want to fly," showing how the need for permits and documents can limit even the imagination and desire for freedom. This reference dialogues with anarchist ideas, especially those of Proudhon, and exposes how much bureaucracy can be an obstacle to the realization of dreams, even the simplest or fanciful."
-Letras.mus.br
This song was chosen for Act 1 as it both sets up the playfulness of our characters before their world comes crumbling down. It serves as a direct contrast to the first song with it's clear vocals and rock style.
Sung by Gal Costa
"The word "attention", present at the beginning of almost all verses, reinforces the need for constant awareness in a hostile environment, but also suggests that it is possible to find power and hope even in the most difficult moments. The passage "Everything is dangerous / Everything is divine wonderful" summarizes this duality, showing that existence requires courage, but also offers opportunities for transcendence. By quoting "swear word, slogan" and "samba exaltation", the music refers to both the language of protest and cultural celebration, indicating that resistance can manifest itself through art and music. Thus, "Divino Maravilhoso" is consolidated as a hymn of alertness, strength and vitality, celebrating the ability to face fear without losing hope."
-Letras.mus.br
This song was chosen for Act 2 due to it's slow build up of concern and call-to-action. While it's playful on the surface, we start to hear dissonant tones and the warnings of what is to come shortly. It also showcases the different ways our characters are responding to the perceived threat emerging.
Chico Buarque
"The context of the military dictatorship in Brazil intensifies the social criticism present in music. Chico Buarque exposes the indifference of society before the death of the worker, as in the verse "he died in the counter-road obstructing traffic", which shows how the tragedy is seen only as an obstacle to urban order, and not as a human loss. Metaphors such as "floated in the air as if it was a bird" and "ended up on the ground like a flabby package" depersonalize the character, highlighting its fragility before the system. The ending, with "God will pay you", brings a bitter irony, sarcastically thanking for precarious conditions and exploitation, while denouncing the lack of recognition and dignity reserved to the Brazilian working class."
-Letras.mus.br
This song was chosen for Act 3 due to it's intensity. No music editing was needed to build tension and fear throughout this piece. The slow build up and attack of this song perfectly encapsulates the horror of the dictatorship and the perils of our characters.
Geraldo Vandré
" 'Pra Não Dizer Que Não Falei Das Flores', by Geraldo Vandré, became one of the greatest symbols of resistance during the military dictatorship in Brazil. The repeated verse "Who knows when the time will come, don't wait for it to happen" is a clear call to collective action, encouraging people not to accept the passivity imposed by the regime and to take the reins of their own destiny. The metaphor of flowers, especially in "they still make the flower their strongest refrain / and believe in the flowers winning the cannon", contrasts the delicacy and hope of flowers to the violence and repression represented by the cannon, suggesting that peaceful resistance may be more powerful than brute force."
-Letras.mus.br
This song was chosen for Act 4 due to it's contrast to Act 3 and its soft rebellion. This song provides a brief moment of calm for our dancers and audience and starts building up the resistance.
Erasmo Carlos
" The song "É Preciso Dar Um Jeito, Meu Amigo", by Erasmo Carlos, brings a direct call to action before passivity, especially in periods of repression. The repeated verse "We need to do something, my friend" works as an urgent call to face injustices and not settle down, reflecting the context of the Brazilian military dictatorship. The inclusion of the song in the film "I’m still here" reinforces this sense, expanding its historical and social relevance."
-Letras.mus.br
This song was chosen for Act 5 for its very clear message of resistance and it's recent appearance in the movie "Ainda Estou Aqui" (I'm Still Here). Given it's inclusion in the movie, we felt it may be the song most likely to have bene heard by the audience. It's build up to a full orchestra and strong vocals allow it to serve as our turning point.
Sung by Elis Regina
"The historical context is fundamental to understand the song. Written in a period of strong political repression, the letter makes direct reference to this environment with phrases like "danger around the corner" and "the sign is closed for us who are young", indicating the obstacles faced by youth before authoritarianism. In addition, the music reflects on maturity, highlighting the importance of valuing real experiences instead of idealized dreams, as in "Living is better than dreaming". By recognizing that the values and idols of the past still influence the present, the song becomes an honest portrait of the process of growing up and realizing that deep changes are harder than they seem."
-Letras.mus.br
This song was chosen for Act 6 as it explores the idea that history is cyclical. It serves as a final call to action for the audience, reminding them that if we don't do anything, history can repeat.
Chico Buarque
"The song alternates between the melancholy memory of difficult times and the hope of overcoming, expressed in the chorus "Will pass". The carnival parade represents both celebration and popular resistance. The repetition of "Ai que vida boa" brings an irony: the joy of the people is fleeting and often illusory, but it is also an act of survival in the face of oppression. By mentioning figures such as "hungry barons" and "retinute napoleons", Chico Buarque criticizes the elites who benefited from the repression, while the people, represented by the sambistas and revelers, keep alive the hope of freedom. Thus, the song reinforces that, despite adversity, the struggle and hope for better days continue and, as the title says, 'will pass'."
-Letras.mus.br
This song was chosen for as our Bow music as it provides a hopeful message, reminding us that while things may look dire now, they too shall pass.
Brasil!
Meu Brasil Brasileiro
Meu mulato inzoneiro
Vou cantar-te nos meus versos
O Brasil, samba que dá
Bamboleio, que faz gingar
O Brasil do meu amor
Terra de Nosso Senhor...
Brasil! Brasil!
Pra mim! Pra mim!
Ô, esse coqueiro que dá coco
Oi, onde amarro minha rede
Nas noites claras de luar
Ai, ói essas fontes murmurantes
Ói onde eu mato a minha sede
E onde a lua vem brincar
Ói, esse Brasil lindo e trigueiro
É o meu Brasil Brasileiro
Terra de samba e pandeiro
Brasil! Brasil!
Pra mim! Pra mim!
(Lyrics from Genius)
Brazil
My Brazilian Brazil
My cunning mulatto
I will sing of you in my verses
Oh, Brazil, samba that gives swing,
That makes people sway
Oh, Brazil of my love
Land of Our Lord
Brazil! Brazil!
For me... for me...
Oh, this palm tree that gives coconuts
Where I hang my hammock
On clear moonlit nights
Oh, hear these murmuring fountains
Where I slake my thirst
And where the moonlight comes to play
Oh, this Brazil, beautiful and swarthy
Is my Brazilian Brazil
Land of samba and pandeiro
Brazil! Brazil!
For me... for me...

Ergueu no patamar quatro paredes sólidas
Agonizou no meio do passeio público

Loved that time as if it were the last
Kissed his wife like she was the last
And every son of yours as if he were the only one
And crossed the street with his shy step
Climbed the construction as if it were machine
Raised in the platform four solid walls
Brick with brick in a magical drawing
Your eyes dull of cement and tear
Sat to rest as if it were Saturday
Ate beans with rice as if it were a prince
Drank and sobbed like a castaway
Danced and laughed as if listening to music
And stumbled in the sky like a drunk
And floated in the air like a bird
And it ended up on the floor made a flabby package
Died in the middle of the public walk
Died in the wrong way disrupting traffic
Loved that time as if it were the last
Kissed his wife like she was the only one
And every son of yours as if it were the prodigal
And crossed the street with his step drunk
Climbed the construction as if it were solid
Stood on the platform four magic walls
Brick with brick in a logical design
Your eyes dull of cement and traffic
Sat to rest like a prince
Ate beans with rice as if it was the maximum
Drank and sobbed like it was machine
Danced and laughed as if it was the next
And stumbled in the sky as if listening to music
And floated in the air as if it were Saturday
And it ended on the floor like a timid package
Dying in the middle of the shipwreck
Died in the opposite way disturbing the public
Loved that time as if it were machine
Kissed his wife as if it were logical
Stood on the platform four flaccid walls
Sat to rest like a bird
And floated in the air like a prince
And it ended up on the floor like a drunken package
Died in the opposite way disrupting the Sabbath
For this bread to eat, for this floor to sleep
The certificate to be born, the concession to smile
For letting me breathe, for letting me exist

For the free liquor that we have to swallow
For the smoke doom that we have to cough
By the hanging scaffolding that we have to fall

By the carpideira woman to praise us and spit
And by the flies pussies to kiss us and cover

Em grandes plantações
Pelas ruas, marchando

Vencendo o canhão

Há soldados armados
Amados ou não
Quase todos perdidos
De armas na mão
Nos quartéis lhes ensinam
Uma antiga lição
De morrer pela pátria
E viver sem razão
Vem, vamos embora

Walking and singing
And following the song
We are all the same
Arms folded or not
In schools, on the streets
Fields, buildings
Walking and singing
And following the song
Come on, let’s go
That waiting is not knowing
Who knows makes the time
Does not expect to happen
Come on, let’s go
That waiting is not knowing
Who knows makes the time
Does not expect to happen
For the fields, there is hunger
In large plantations
Through the streets, marching
Undecided cords
Still make the flower
Your strongest chorus
And they believe in flowers
Winning the cannon
Come on, let’s go
That waiting is not knowing
Who knows makes the time
Does not expect to happen
Come on, let’s go
That waiting is not knowing
Who knows makes the time
Does not expect to happen
There are armed soldiers
Loved or not
Almost all lost
Of guns in hand
In the barracks they teach them
An old lesson
To die for the homeland
And live without reason
Come on, let’s go
That waiting is not knowing
Who knows makes the time
Does not expect to happen
Come on, let’s go
That waiting is not knowing
Who knows makes the time
Does not expect to happen
In schools, on the streets
Fields, buildings
We are all soldiers
Armed or not
Walking and singing
And following the song
We are all the same
Arms folded or not
The loves in the mind
The flowers on the floor
The certainty in front
The story in hand
Walking and singing
And following the song
Learning and teaching
A new lesson
Come on, let’s go
That waiting is not knowing
Who knows makes the time
Does not expect to happen
Come on, let’s go

É preciso dar um jeito, meu amigo
Descansar não adianta

And the journey was so long
And in my walk
Obstacles on the road
But finally here I am
But I’m ashamed
With the things I saw
But I won’t be silent
In comfort, accommodated
How many around
You have to find a way, my friend
You have to find a way, my friend
Rest is no use
When we get up
How much has happened
Children are taken away
By the hand of great people
Who brought me so far
Left me and went away
How many around

Você me pergunta pela minha paixão
Hoje eu sei que quem me deu a ideia
De uma nova consciência e juventude
Tá em casa guardado por Deus
Contando o vil metal

I don’t want to tell you, my great love
Of the things I learned on the records
I want to tell you how I lived
And everything that happened to me
Living is better than dreaming
I know love is a good thing
But I also know that any corner
It is smaller than the life of any person
So be careful, baby
There’s danger around the corner
They won and the sign is closed to us
That we are young
To hug your brother
And kiss your girl on the street
Is that he made his arm
Your lip and your voice
You ask me for my passion
I say that I am enchanted as a new invention
I’ll stay in this city, I won’t go back to the country
For I see coming in the wind smell of new season
I know everything in the living wound of my heart
It’s been a while, I saw you on the street
Hair in the wind, young people gathered
On the wall of memory
This memory is the picture that hurts most
My pain is to realize
That although we have done everything we did
We are still the same and live
We are still the same and live
Like our parents
Our idols are still the same
And appearances do not deceive, no
You say that after them
No one else appeared
You can even say I’m on the outside
Or else I’m inventing
But it is you who loves the past and does not see
It’s you who loves the past and does not see
That the new always comes
Today I know who gave me the idea
Of a new consciousness and youth
Is at home guarded by God
Counting the vile metal
My pain is to realize
That although we have done everything, everything, everything we did
We are still the same and live
We are still the same and live
We are still the same and live

Que aqui sangraram pelos nossos pés
Que aqui sambaram nossos ancestrais
Num tempo
Página infeliz da nossa história
Passagem desbotada na memória
Das nossas novas gerações
Dormia
A nossa pátria-mãe tão distraída
Sem perceber que era subtraída
Em tenebrosas transações
Seus filhos
Erravam cegos pelo continente
Levavam pedras feito penitentes
Erguendo estranhas catedrais
E um dia afinal
Tinham o direito a uma alegria fugaz
Uma ofegante epidemia
Que se chamava carnaval
O carnaval, o carnaval (vai passar)
Palmas pra ala dos barões famintos
O bloco dos napoleões retintos
E os pigmeus do Boulevard
Meu Deus, vem olhar

Faded passage in memory

Slept
Our motherland so distracted
Without realizing that it was subtracted
In dark transactions
Your children
They wandered blind by the continent
They took stones as penitents
Raising strange cathedrals
And one day after all
They had the right to a fleeting joy
A panting epidemic
That was called carnival
The carnival, the carnival (will pass)
Cheers for the hungry barons' wing
The block of the retintos napoleons
And the pygmies of the Boulevard
My God, come look
Come and see a city singing
The evolution of freedom
Until the day dawns
Woe to the good life, O read
Ai that good life, oh lará
The standard of the general sanatorium will pass
Woe to the good life, O read
Ai that good life, oh lará
The standard of the general sanatorium
Will pass
