A group of friends find the power in community and art as an oppressive “big brother” like force attempts to restrict and censor their creative freedom.
"The Experimental Performance Series (EPS) is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate Theater, Dance and Performance Studies (TDPS) students to present self-produced works on stage in a shared program.
Students are given limited technical support (ie. lighting and sounds design) and are expected to either design their own production or recruit other students to help them out.
An EPS is a great way for students to work on longer projects while also learning how to organize a production on their own. Students are given an optional limited budget and can also borrow props/costuming from the TDPS costume shop if they want to.
EPS 1 will feature works by Lottie Owens, Jamie Chen and myself."

The Divisão de Censura de Diversões Públicas (Department of Public Entertainment Censorship) or DCDP was the official censorship and oversight body of the Federal Police Department during the Brazilian military dictatorship. The DCDP was responsible for authorizing or censoring all media content, including music, plays, books, films, series, and soap operas. They also oversaw public performances, presentations, and cultural content.
Caminhando e Cantando uses the voice of the musicians, who managed to circumvent the DCDP, with protest songs composed in subtle ways that criticized the government, without being censored. These songs became the voices of the revolution. This contemporary dance performance explores multiple songs, each defining and exploring different phases of the Military Dictatorship.
All the music used was produced during this era of the military dictatorship, criticizing the state of the government at that time, and bringing hope to the generation that was suffering.
Nineteen Eighty-Four is a dystopian novel by the English writer George Orwell. Published on 8 June 1949, Nineteen Eighty-Four focuses on the consequences of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and the effects of repressive regimes on people within society. The novel explores the dichotomy between truth/facts and propaganda and how repressive regimes use and manipulate both to their advantage.
"Big Brother" surpasses the bounds of the Novel and has become a powerful and recognizable symbol of surveillance with the ubiquitous slogan "Big Brother is watching you". This slogan reminds the reader that privacy and choice are luxuries that repressive regimes are quick to remove. Caminhando e Cantando uses imagery associated with "Big Brother" to further highlight the surveillance often found within repressive regimes.
