Numerous studies have shown that the act of reading itself - regardless of the material - is beneficial. Studies also show that providing kids with a choice of materials helps develop a sustained habit of reading, leading to life-long learning and pleasure.
Recreational reading over the summer helps students build vocabulary, practice inference and comprehension skills, and keeps minds ready for returning to academic classes in the fall. This also includes the act of listening to a story.
Family-wide discussions are also helpful in summarizing and interpreting stories; we encourage several members of a household to read or listen to the same book and discuss it and/or to share what they are reading with each other regularly.
Please purchase your summer reading by using our virtual book shop with this link here or go to the relevant grade using the above drop down menu
These summer reading guides are intended to provide a starting point. Reading or listening to anything, is beneficial, whether or not the title is on these lists. If your child is interested in a different title in the series or in other books by that author, follow your child's lead. These are just suggestions.
Please refer to your child's grade level to find a variety of titles and sources planned to generate excitement about books and reading. These recommendations are intended to be diverse in genre, content, character / author identity, and reading level. While lists are grouped by grade, only each child/ family knows which title is a perfect fit.
On each grade level page, you will find a link to books that can be sorted by content, genre and reading level. This tool is a useful start, but know it is not perfect in its ability to synthesize data.
Once you've found some choices, please purchase through our virtual store between
Monday May 12th -
Friday May 30th
