The Temple College Science Challenge is an academic competition that takes place during a an immersive one-day college visit at Temple College. The competition includes a written exam and three hands-on lab experiences.
Medals, certificates and Temple College scholarships are available. High achievers are selected for each hands-on challenge, in each subject area of the written exam, and for overall excellence. The high school that has the highest achieving students overall will also receive a plaque honoring the high school. After the event, Temple College scholarships may also be awarded to qualified students who participate in the event.
Each Temple College Science Challenge scholarship will cover most of the cost for a in-district student in earning a two year associate degree in science from Temple College. The scholarship cannot be transferred to another institution.
TBI students, and high school juniors are not eligible to receive the Science Challenge scholarship. Dual credit students who have taken greater than 8 credit hours will also not be eligible for the scholarship.
The Science Challenge will take place on Friday, January 24, 2025. Participants will check in at the Performing Arts Center starting at 8:30 am. The event will end at about 3:30 pm. A t-shirt and a box lunch will be provided to all preregistered participants.
The exam includes sections that cover biology, chemistry, physics, math, and geology. The lab challenges include chemistry, biology, math, and geophysics events.

Students will need to miss a Friday school day in order to participate in the Science Challenge. We encourage science teachers to help arrange transportation for a group of students from their school as a school-sponsored event. Your students can earn academic awards to boost their college applications and even compete for a Temple College scholarship that covers nearly a full two-year associate degree. The event also serves as a campus visit including a tour and the opportunity to apply. We will provide lunch and make sure that they have a full, fun, and informative experience on a college campus.
All high schools schools are invited. If you can arrange transportation to Temple College, then your school is welcome to participate.
Please note that current juniors, dual credit students with more than 8 credits at Temple College, and TBI participants can win awards but are not eligible for the Temple College scholarships.
High school juniors and seniors who are interested in the sciences and would like to compete for academic awards. Seniors can also complete for Temple college scholarships.
Local businesses and Temple College alumni are invited to participate and recruit prospective students.
