Sephora was founded in 1969. At this time it wasn't even called Sephora instead the name was Shop 8 and founded by Dominique Mandonnaud in Limoges, France. "Mandonnaud wanted to provide a place for customers to try the products before making a purchase".(Love To Know) A self-service shop open-sell concept. Shop 8 was a perfume shop in France before it became a beauty retailer. It grouped products by type rather than brands. The year was 1970 when Sephora began. A UK's boots PLC chain and Nouvelles Galeries branded Sephora with 38 stores ( Love To Know)
Where in 1993, Mandonnaud purchased the Sephora chain and merged the 38 Sephora stores with his 12 shop 8 stores. Where they made their first store on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Then in 1997, it was acquired by LVMH. "Sephora's name derives from the Greek word meaning beauty; sephos, and the Greek spelling Zipporah (Sepphora)"(Forbes). In the 2000s the first catalog was published. Entering the digital world with its first launch of Sephora.com in the US before the new millennium. Since 1997 Sephora has been nothing but thriving.
