The graphic imagery of gold and luxury reflects Dior’s brand values of luxury. Charlize Theron’s portrayal emphasizes self-confidence, beauty, and independence, with some key concepts related to empowerment. In 2004, global luxury markets targeted self-expression and individual success. The ad accentuates individualistic, high-power-distance, short-term-oriented societies, appealing to those desiring immediate extravagance and uniqueness in their products. I chose this ad because of its cinematic quality and appeal. It successfully captures Dior’s luxury while empowering women through the advertisement.
This ad features Johnny Depp in a desert landscape, in the company of Indigenous imagery and cultural elements, with the slogan: “Sauvage: The Wild Side of Dior.” The campaign emphasizes masculinity, freedom, and primal instincts, incorporating elements of nature and luxury. The ad combines wild landscapes with Dior’s luxury style, using Johnny Depp as a symbol of power and independence. However, it was mainly criticized for using Indigenous cultural symbols in an insensitive way. The word “Sauvage,” which means “wild” in French, caused additional controversy because it has been used negatively in the past to describe Indigenous culture.
