NEXT STEPS and RESOURCES

Choose (at least) one to of the following ideas try between now and when you view Session 3:

1. If you haven't had a chance to try some of the Session 1 Operation Sense tasks with students, why not try them between now and when we meet again. Or perhaps you want to investigate students' thinking about place value and administer the 35 Dinosaurs or 52 and 43 Candies diagnostic tasks. Either way, come prepared to share what you've discovered about student learning and your initial thinking about how you might build understanding.

2. As you help students strengthen their operation sense and move through the operation sense trajectory, explore the role that visual representations and paraphrasing can play. What evidence can you collect that shows growth in students' ability to use the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction to see connections between the semantic and standard number sentences? What did you find to be especially effective in advancing learning? Share your findings with others.

3. Try some games and activities from Part 2 that you believe will help build basic facts and computation strategies. What were your favourites? How did you help to "draw out the mathematics" in these activities during the consolidation phase?
