The ultimate goal of the hiring process is to have all of our corps members hired before the first day of school. When thinking about where we will place corps members for the 2020-21 school year, we will focus on:
Do I get to choose my placement after interviews?
No. We ask you to provide information before the interviews and feedback after the interviews in order to help us match you with a position and school that is the best fit. We will field offers from the principals and then match you with a school that creates the greatest collective impact. In order to make these matches, we’re considering your preferences and feedback, our district partners’ needs, and other corps members’ preferences and feedback. We will match you with a placement that takes all of these factors into account.
When is my hire official?
After your interviews, we will match corps members with schools based on the district need, interviewer feedback, and corps member feedback. When you are matched, we will notify you that you have been so. At that point, your hire is 95% final, but is not 100% final until you sign your contract with the district. After you receive notification of your school, we will provide instructions on what paperwork the district requires you to submit to officially hire you. After you have submitted the paperwork, you will sign your contract. Most corps members do not sign contracts until the summer. In a few rare circumstances in the past, corps members’ placements have changed due to budget changes or vacancy changes. For this reason, we recommend you wait to finalize your housing until the summer as you are finalizing your hiring paperwork and contract.
When will I hear about where I’ve been hired?
During the early interview window, it takes us about three to four weeks after the final day of interviews to match corps members with schools and finalize hires. While this may seem like a long lag time, the reality is that it takes us this long to receive feedback from all our interviewers, match corps members with schools, and then receive final confirmation from principals and district Human Resources departments. If we can move more quickly, we will, but this is typically how long it takes. After interview day and over the summer, the process may move more quickly, although there will always be some lag time as we confirm your hire with both the principal and the district human resources department.
What if I don’t pass my certification test(s) before Interview Day?
Only corps members who have passed their certification tests will be eligible to participate in the early hiring process. Corps members who have not passed their certification tests by Interview Day during Residency risk not being eligible to register for our ECU Licensure Program and thus not being fully licensed, being less hirable by our district partners, and if hired being compensated on sub-pay and possibly asked to resign if testing needs are not met in a given time determined by their school district.
