WLC Model United Nations Officer Elections Guide

Procedure:

  1. Submit a request to run for office to the current club president no later than 48 hours before the meeting where elections will take place.
    1. Submit the request via the attached form below. (Failure to do so will disquaify any candidate).
      1. Include your name, grade level, and position you wish to run for.
  2. A list of names will be sent to the entire club indicating who is running to hold office and what position they intend to run for 48 hours before the meeting.
  3. At the designated meeting, the election proceedings will commence in parliamentary procedure.
    1. The club president will begin debate and speak first on the subject for a speaking time of no more than 10 minutes.
      1. This is to inform delegates of the process, individuals running for office, or anything else that may need clarification.
        1. This time may not be used to endorse a candidate for any position.
      2. A mandatory yield to questions will take place in order to address any questions that delegates may have.
    2. Immediately following the club president’s speech, the presidency position will be debated. Each candidate will have 10 minutes to address the club and convince the delegates why they should be president.
      1. After the speaker's list of the candidates for presidents is exhausted the club will directly move into voting procedure.
        1. Each delegate has one vote and can be cast during the anonymous voting.
        2. The club advisor will then conduct the anonymous voting procedure.
        3. After all votes are counted, the president will be announced.
    3. Immediately following the election of the president, the vice-presidency position will be debated. Each candidate will have 10 minutes to address the club and convince the delegates why they should be vice-president.
      1. After the speaker's list of the candidates for vice-presidents is exhausted the club will directly move into voting procedure.
        1. Each delegate has one vote and can be cast during the anonymous voting.
        2. The club advisor will then conduct the anonymous voting procedure.
        3. After all votes are counted, the vice-president will be announced.
    4. Immediately following the election of the vice-president, the legal counsel position will be debated. Each candidate will have 10 minutes to address the club and convince the delegates why they should be legal counsel.
      1. After the speaker's list of the candidates for legal counsel is exhausted the club will directly move into voting procedure.
        1. Each delegate has one vote and can be cast during the anonymous voting.
        2. The club advisor will then conduct the anonymous voting procedure.
        3. After all votes are counted, the legal counsel will be announced.
    5. Following the election of the new executive board, the former president and executive board will make a brief remark and then hand control over to the new president.
    6. At this time, contol of the debate will be in under the direction of the newly elected president where he or she will make a statement to all of the club delegates and adjourn debate until next year.


Clarifications:

  • A candidate can run for one or more offices if their intended office is filled by another candidate.
    • Ex) Candidate for president loses then runs for vice-president.
  • Point or motions can be made at any time; only points of orders should be used to interrupt the speaker.
  • A motion for a caucus can be made.
  • Elected officers will take immediate control after the president and executive board finish their remarks.
  • No recounts or other contests shall be made unless with the express permission by the President.
  • Candidates must first be nominated by another delegate.


Important: Each candidate who runs for office has expressed interest in leading the club. Regardless of who ends up in leadership positions, it is important that each candidate takes a role, whether formally or informally, to help and maintain and better the club.
