Orchestra is a musical ensemble made up of string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments working together to create music. Learning an orchestra instrument helps students develop musical skills, discipline, teamwork, listening, and creativity. As students grow, they learn not only how to play their individual instrument but also how to perform as part of a larger group, contributing their unique part to a shared musical experience.

In KUSD, orchestra instruction begins in 5th grade through the Beginning Orchestra program. Students receive small-group, pull-out lessons once per week for 30 minutes, where they learn the fundamentals of their instrument, music reading, and performance skills in a supportive setting.

In middle school, orchestra becomes part of students' elective course options. Students transition from small-group lessons to rehearsing and performing as a large ensemble, where they develop advanced musicianship, collaboration skills, and the experience of creating music together as an orchestra.
