Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE)
Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) is a state and federally mandated program for young children with disabilities ages 3-5. Eligible children with disabilities, ages 3-5, are entitled to receive a free appropriate public education (FAPE) under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in the least restrictive environment (LRE) in accordance with their individual needs. Children who meet eligibility criteria may receive Early Childhood Special Education services in a variety of settings such as a pre-kindergarten classroom, in the home, or in community settings such as Head Start and pre-school.
Fort Worth ISD provides ECSE educational services for children ages 3 to 5 who have the need for a continuum of special education services. The goal of their instruction is always to move toward an inclusive educational setting with their age-appropriate peers without disabilities.
The ECSE classroom provides an opportunity for students to learn according to their individualized needs and learning styles. As with all our special education programs, the ultimate outcome is for the students to achieve their maximum development of independence.
The ECSE classroom focuses on language, cognition, fine motor, gross motor, self-help skills and socialization. Teachers and Para-Professionals address the individual needs of each student through developmentally appropriate learning experiences while fostering an independent sense of self in relation to family, peers and the community environment.
