While there are suggestions for what type of investigation each grade level should be engaging with in the Teacher Guide, they are not requirements.  If a 5th grade has a really good idea for a descriptive investigation, then they can do that.  We just want to caution our younger students from trying to complete an investigation that might not be developmentally appropriate for them (ex: a 2nd grade attempting an experimental investigation).
