Rice is an essential staple on the daily dining table of Chinese communities and is also the pride of our hometown, Dacun Township. Tsun Shang Elementary School is located in Dachun Township, in the center of the Changhua Plain. Most residents rely on farming as their main livelihood. Due to the favorable climate and soil conditions, golden and full rice grains have long been a traditional agricultural specialty of this region. However, with the growing concerns of sustainable development and climate change, low-carbon smart agriculture has become a mainstream trend. How to produce rice efficiently while reducing methane emissions through intermittent irrigation, and at the same time address the issue of net-zero carbon and environmental sustainability, has become one of the greatest challenges facing modern agriculture.
This research project was carried out with an educational purpose, focusing on improving rice cultivation methods and reducing rice husk waste and carbon footprints. The study explores how smart agricultural practices can move toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project is titled “A Grain of Rice’s Green Journey: Net-Zero Carbon from Farm to Table.” The research methods included data collection, expert interviews, field visits, and experiential learning activities. The collected information was then organized and analyzed, and the findings were used to promote carbon-reduction actions within the rice industry. This project demonstrates considerable influence and action in promoting sustainability and holds valuable research significance.
The successful completion of this study would not have been possible without the generous support of many individuals. We would especially like to thank Dr. Wu Yi-Jian from the Taichung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station and Mr. Wu Li-Yang from Yixing Rice Mill for their tremendous assistance. Through multiple visits, guided tours, and hands-on activities, they provided the students of Tsun Shang with valuable knowledge that cannot be learned in the classroom. Their selfless dedication and contribution are truly admirable. We would also like to sincerely thank our hardworking advisors Director Jin-Feng, Section Leader Mu-Jia, and Teacher Hong-Wei for sacrificing their holidays to guide and accompany us throughout this research. We dedicate this research achievement to our teachers and to the farmers of our hometown, and we express our deepest gratitude through this acknowledgement.
