Representation refers to how learners perceive and comprehend information that is presented to them. In this section, we look at how online online digital tools all educators to customize the display and input of information they give students. Alternative means of communication offers students a more flexible method for activating prior knowledge. When visual and auditory information is shared simultaneously, referred to as 'multi-modalities', according to Xiaowen (2006), learners ability to attend to cues and better integrate this information increases. Being able to communicate their understanding of new information means learners need to have language options. Dual language texts, translation tools and vocabulary builders can facilitate second language acquisition. Al-Seghayer (2001) explains, that activation of both language systems, promotes representations and interpretations that aid in the development of vocabulary, decoding and memory skills. Digital tools optimize learners ability to represent their thinking and understanding in meaningful ways.
