Woburn’s co-op program offers outstanding opportunities for our SHSM students to gain real-world experience in a wide range of professional settings. From hospitals and clinics to community health organizations and wellness centers, students are placed in environments that match their interests and career goals. These placements provide valuable hands-on training, mentorship, and insight into the healthcare field, helping students build essential skills and confidence. Each co-op experience also supports students in completing their SHSM requirements and working toward earning their Red Seal designation—an important recognition of their specialized learning. Whether students are exploring future careers or preparing for post-secondary pathways, Woburn’s co-op program is a powerful step forward.
Our SHSM students are gaining hands-on experience in diverse co-op placements—exploring careers, building skills, and shaping their futures.
“Being part of the SHSM program in healthcare and doing a co-op placement really helped me figure out what I want to do in the future. SHSM gave me a better understanding of the healthcare field through hands-on learning and sector-specific training. My co-op placement was a big part of that—it gave me real experience in a healthcare environment where I got to observe professionals, help out with small tasks, and learn how important teamwork and communication are. It helped solidy that healthcare is the right path for me and gave me more confidence moving forward.” Grade 12 Health & Wellness SHSM student
"My time at my coding co-op (School Coding 4 Kids) led to both personal and professional growth. Throughout the coding process, I ran into many bugs where the answer was not always clear, and in order to fix them, I needed to have patience, which helped improve my problem-solving skills. Additionally, this co-op gave me a growth mindset as I realized that there is a lot to learn and create with code, which inspired me to start my own passion project.
As for professional growth, this co-op helped me greatly, from giving me real-world experience to giving me clarity on my future career aspirations. The main project involved creating a Student Registration platform where students can sign up to enroll in the school with built-in administrative tools. Which meant that real people would be using the program that I created. I learned how to implement feedback, write efficient code, and improve the platform based on user experience, which helped me understand what a real-world software development cycle looks like. Over the past year, I struggled to decide what I wanted to pursue in the future, exploring various fields without direction. However, after this co-op placement, I was introduced to the Financial Technology field, which combines my passion for business with programming." MR, Grade 12 ICT SHSM Student
