OPAL

Outdoor Play and Learning at Northlea

At Northlea, in addition to offering organized athletics programming, there is a healthy balance of unstructured play options for our students though OPAL. Play, an activity that is intrinsically motivated and entails active engagement, is encouraged for all students. We open our two school-aged, supervised OPAL sheds throughout the school day, and students are welcome to use the loose parts at recesses and lunch and with their classroom teacher during instructional time . Our loose parts inventory includes tires, milk crates, logs, buckets, baking tins and many items donated by parents and collected by staff. We encourage mindfulness for students when using the loose parts: Is it fun for everyone? Is it safe for you, others and the loose parts? Are you being inclusive and respectful?
