Salinity

Description:

Salinity testing reveals salt levels in the water. Usual culprits include pool drainages in the fall, industrial activity, and road salt. High levels can kill off living things such as fish or frogs.

Name of Device:

LaMotte Tracer Salt/EC/TDS Pocketester - 1749

Batteries:

4x Cr2032 Button Cells

Use:

  1. Turn unit on by pressing the ON/OFF button.

  2. Take protective cap off.

  3. Assure the right mode is set. (S and PPm ) for salinity, (uS) for conductivity, (PPm only) for TDS. Hold MODE for 2+ seconds to cycle between measurement modes.

  4. Dip probe into a water sample container (20ml plastic cup in kit) from river, lake or using liquefied soil (1 part soil, 2 parts distilled water, shaken, settled and decanted into 20ml container).

  5. Slowly stir end of probe until reading stabilizes.

  6. Rinse electrode and put protective cap back on.

  7. Turn off probe.

  8. Rinse probe and cap with distilled/deionized water and dry completely after daily use.

Changing Temperature Units°F or °C:

1. With the TRACER off, press and hold the CAL button.

2. With the CAL button pressed, momentarily press the ON/OFF button.

When SELF CAL appears in the display, release the CAL button. The

TRACER will return to the operational mode with the temperature

displayed in the new units.

Auto Shut off time= 10 min.

Long term Storage:

  • Air dry cap and probe completely for short or long term storage.

  • Remove the batteries for Long term Storage (2+ months of non-use)

Calibration:

    • TDS and conductivity standards not supplied. Calibration for salinity:

      1. Rinse 20ml sample cups and probe ends (remove protective cap first) in deionized/distilled water. Allow probes to air dry, force dry cups with paper towels.

      2. Shake provided Salt calibration standard 3000ppm container well, right before use.

      3. Fill 20ml sample cups with Salt calibration standard 3000ppm to 20ml mark.

      4. Turn probe on, AFTER self cal in air, insert probe end into Salt standard solution.

      5. Slowly stir solution. Allow probe to stabilize.

      6. Press and hold CAL button for 2+ seconds until CAL appears on display. SA = success

      7. Rinse probe and cup with DI water and allow to air dry completely before storage with protective cap, or cap immediately if using that day.
