The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) is a program for students that opens the door to work in apprenticeship occupations through the co-operative education program. Students have an opportunity to become registered apprentices and work towards becoming certified journeypersons in a skilled trade while completing their secondary school diplomas.
To be an OYAP student you need:
to have 14 credits
to be 15 years old OR
to be 16 years old to go on a construction site
to have co-op on your timetable
Regular OYAP is for a student who wants to work in a skilled trade and learn from a qualified tradesperson.
Accelerated OYAP is for a student who commited and eager to earn more credits and is willing to attend a technical school. Students will work in a co-op placement and learn from a licensed tradesperson.
Specialized OYAP is for a student who wants to earn their apprenticeship while still in high school. Students will learn on the job from a licensed tradesperson and attend College or a Union training centre to earn their level 1 training in the trade of their choice.
Step to Construction is for a student who is interested in the construction industry but is not quite sure what trade. Students will spend time on a construction site allowing them to gain a variety of trades in the construction industry.
Step to Transportation is for a student who would like to work in the transportation industry. Students will spend time trying out a variety of trades in the transportation industry..
