Family Studies and Social Sciences

The discipline of social sciences and humanities encompasses four subject areas: equity studies, general social sciences, philosophy, and world religions. Although these subject areas are very different from one another, they all systematically explore the ways in which individuals influence and are influenced by families, communities, cultures, institutions, and societies, and by ideas, norms, and values.

The GOALS of the Social Science & Humanities Department are : 

• to foster an appreciation of how past and present individuals and events have shaped our global and Canadian societies

• to provide students with opportunities to analyse local, national, and global issues, and relate these issues to their daily lives

• to teach problem solving and critical thinking skills

• to develop research and literacy skills in our students using a variety of methods including the latest technology

• to understand that our place on this planet, past, present and future is intrinsically linked to the environment through a variety of human systems

• to develop the moral capacity to evaluate human actions in order to promote responsible stewardship of the planet and its inhabitants.

Family Studies is an interdisciplinary subject area integrating social and physical sciences in the study of topics arising from daily life. It includes the study of individual and family development, relationships, parenting, decision making, resource management, food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, housing, and health sciences.

The Critical Areas of Learning are : 

• Explore social science theories from a variety of perspectives

• Become familiar with current issues that affect individuals, families and cultures

• Identify and refine skills that contribute to personal well - being

• Develop critical and creative thinking skills

• Gain hands-on experience needed to develop practical skills and understanding
