Hello Future Gr 10 pre-IB Families!
Congratulations on your child’s successes and their desire to take on a more challenging academic program.
My name is Karen Doherty-Ross and I am the IB coordinator at Monarch Park and your child’s guide on this journey.
Right now, I’m sure you are all full of questions and anticipation of what is to come. On the MPC IB website, I’ve posted “Differences between IB and the Collegiate Program.” This was information garnered from some of our teachers a few years ago, but gives you and your child a good idea of what the current grade 9 pre-IBs have been working on. You’ll notice that in math, our students are doing half of their work without a calculator. You’ll want to brush up your mental math skills prior to the start of grade 10 if that’s a struggle.
For course selection:
Grade 10 mandatory pre-IB courses
English ENG2D7
French FSF2D7
Math MPM2D7
Science SNC2D7
Psychology HSP3U7
Mandatory grades 9 and 10 OSSD courses are listed below - anything not completed in grade 9 must be taken in grade 10 or summer school prior to grade 10. If you are going to take a course in summer school, indicate it on your MyBlueprint prior to submission.
Course selection is done on MyBlueprint for all TDSB students. If you are new to the TDSB, you must register in person at the school and complete course selection manually this year.
Geography CGC1W1
Gr 9 Art Various course codes Everyone must complete at least one art credit
Phys Ed Various course codes Everyone must complete at least one phys ed credit
Tech Various course codes Everyone must complete at least one tech course (course code starting with T) in grade 9 or 10
History CHC2D1
Civics & Careers GLC2O1 and CHV2O1 These are both half courses and both must be completed. Can be taken in grade 9 or 10.
Grade 10 students must take eight courses. You are not permitted to have a spare. When you do course selection in February, if you have taken all of the required courses (for grades 9 and 10), you can choose some optional courses. Provided you have the pre-requisite, you can choose the course. Here are all of the courses being offered for the 26-27 school year.
In grade 10, you can choose a grade 11 course as an option if you are in the pre-IB programme. Optional courses are never guaranteed. Placement in optional courses is dependent on space, need by students in the actual course grade, and if it fits into the pre-IB timetable as our pre-IB classes only exist in certain blocks.
Many students choose SPH3U (grade 11 physics) or CLN3M (grade 11 law). You can try to choose more than one grade 11 optional course in grade 10 but you are unlikely to get them both.
If you have any questions about the program or the school, please let me know. Email is the best way to get a hold of me as I’m in a classroom every morning.
