Happy Monday Messages

Imagine working for two different companies. In one company, you have a boss who is continually telling you the areas in which you need to improve and another company where your boss praises you on a weekly basis for your accomplishments. Which boss would you want to work harder for? In my experience, students blossom as a result of positive reinforcement. For this reason, each week I post a Happy Monday Message on our classroom website to each child in my classroom. This messages focuses on a newly developed skill that the child has developed, or positive character traits they have exhibited in the classroom.  You will be able to access this message on this page.

The Story of Evan

In my first year teaching I worked with a student named Evan (name changed for the purpose of anonymity). Evan was an adventurous spirit who loved to test the limits of how far he could push people of authority. One morning, Evan tried to sneak into class before the bell had rung. I told him that if he were to come into the class, he could help his fellow students by unstacking the chairs. He did so a tad reluctantly. The following Monday, when I read aloud each child's Happy Monday Message, I thanked Evan for coming in and unstacking each child's chair in the classroom. I thanked him for his kindness and for caring for the classroom community. That week, Evan took it upon himself to come and unstack the classroom chairs each day. He did so until the very last day of school, but this was not all. Each morning after he had unstacked our classroom chairs, Evan went to our neighboring classrooms to see if he could unstack their chairs as well. By the end of the year Evan had taken the initiative to unstack the chairs of the 4 main classrooms on the first floor. That year, Evan proved him self as an inspirational, caring leader. He demonstrated how far a little positivity can go.

Junior Kindergarten:

Amelia: You did such a great job singing the life cycle of a butterfly song last week.  I loved the little caterpillar voice that you used.  I also loved how you were able to draw the number 235 in our place value chart last week.

Ben:  I loved that you acted out each stage of the butterfly life cycle for me on the carpet.  You were able to do it so quickly.  I also loved that during math time you were able to come up and draw the number 435 with place value units.

Emmeline: You did such a great job drawing the life cycle of a butterfly last week.  I loved that after you drew each picture, you acted out each stage for me.  I liked that you told me that inside the chrysalis the caterpillar turned to caterpillar soup.

Jasper: You did such a great job explaining to the class that a butterfly is an insect because it has 6 legs and 3 body parts.

June:  I loved that you wanted to be the first one to start drawing the life cycle of a butterfly on Tuesday.  I loved that you explained that you wanted to draw as many eggs on the leaf as you could because some butterflies lay over 1000 eggs.

Lucas:  I loved that each day last week you would go up to our caterpillars to see if any of them had gone into the J-pose.  I also loved that you wanted to help plant milkweed so we could bring more butterflies to our garden.

Markus: I loved how serious you were when you acted out our caterpillar life cycle song.  It was great that you reminded your friend beside you to “get up and be a caterpillar!”  I also loved that you shared that you and your brother went to the park to get leaves for our caterpillars.

Minerva: I loved that after we watched a science clip on caterpillars you shared with the class that some butterflies lay over 1000 eggs.  I loved that you told the class you wouldn’t want 1000 babies.

Santiago: I loved how during our morning problem of the day, you acted out what to do if someone was frustrating you in class and how you used this script when someone took your toy.   I also loved how you explained to the class that insects have 6 legs.

Sophia:  You did such a great job as a scientist last week and explained to the class how a butterfly starts as an egg, then turns into a caterpillar, then a chrysalis and finally a butterfly.  It was great how you explained that when a butterfly lays their eggs in Spring the cycle begins again.

Theo:  I loved that during your free time, you decided to write out all the sight words you know how to write.  You wrote: on, the, mom, dad, sap, clap, tap, nap, eat and sat!  I also loved that you wanted to set up a science table where we could observe our caterpillars.

Wendel:  I loved that when we had caterpillars visit our classroom, you shared that caterpillars are not pollinators but they grow into pollinators when they are butterflies.

I also loved that you researched how the caterpillars attach to a branch to make a chrysalis, you explained that they made a silk pad to stay in place.

Natalie:You did a great job explaining how butterflies are insects and have six legs but when they are baby caterpillars they have 12 and this doesn’t fit in the insect box.   I loved how you also shared that butterflies are symmetrical.
