ACADEMIC SUPPORTS FOR STUDENTS WITH VARIED LEARNING NEEDS
GLE109 - General Learning Strategies for Grade 9 Students.
Students who have an IEP and would benefit from ongoing support for academic success should select this course. It will be one of their eight courses, so they will select one less elective course. This course provides explicit instruction on various learning strategies, as well as providing time for students to complete work for their other classes in a supportive environment. This course is taken in one semester only. GLS1O1 (learning strategies) is also an option for students who want to take this course, but don’t have an IEP.
These two courses are offered to students who are performing below grade level and would benefit from additional practice in fundamental skills prior to beginning the corresponding grade 9 Academic course. These courses are offered in the first half of the school year and each have a full credit value. The benefit of these courses is an increased readiness for the academic level work. If students select one of these courses, they will not be able to take an elective course. If they select both, students will delay one of the compulsory courses (For example, Arts, Phys. Ed or Geography) until grade 10 in order to fit these in. Students who are considering this option should discuss their course selection with nuriaroblesevans@tdsb.on.ca directly.
Students who are accessing ESL support usually have assessments in the Spring. Until the assessment is complete, students should choose ENG1D1. Please speak to your grade 8 school about the assessment process if you'd like to choose ESL.
Homework Hangout is an afterschool support for students needing help with homework or looking for a space to work. Homework Hangout runs Monday through Thursday from 3:15 - 4:30.
Teachers and senior students are available to support students as needed.
