Math manipulatives help students build understanding of concepts in numeracy.

Numeracy and Math

Our Math and Numeracy department's goals are to enhance essential numeracy skills and to build a love of numbers in all of our students!

To help bridge numeracy gaps, incoming students in our Academic Pathway program participate in a full year of math learning. During semester one all students take a Numeracy Foundations course. With a focus on diagnosing areas of need and building the skills necessary for success in grade 9 destreamed math (MAT1W), Numeracy Foundations utilizes the extensive use of manipulatives, group based inquiry (Building Thinking Classrooms), manipulatives and digital tools. In semester two, with increased comfort in math,  our students will be better equipped to succeed in MAT1W.

Students in our Life Skills program take math courses with a focus on developing the numeracy skills needed for independent living.  Students develop familiarity with numbers, as well as practical numeracy skills like handling money, using a cash register and personal banking.

All numeracy teachers at Heydon Park have received training and support to integrate Building Thinking Classrooms into our teaching practice. Students work to solve problems in small groups using collaborative inquiry and vertical spaces to develop numeracy skills and a love of numbers. This is an evidence based approach to math instruction, is supported by the TDSB and has been shown to enhance both the numeracy and thinking/problem solving skills of students.
