The Harbord Collegiate Social & Global Studies (SGS) Department is a thriving department with courses that help students understand both the local and global worlds around them. With a focus on inquiry & project-based learning, critical thinking, as well as hands on experiences, SGS courses prepare students with transferable skills that apply to any direction they take in their postsecondary futures. Exciting news! The Social & Global Studies Department is going on an international trip during March Break 2026, led by Ms. Kennedy, Ms. Ayala, Mr. Magney & Mr. MacTavish. The trip goes to Berlin, Prague, Krakow and Budapest. The trip is now full.
2026/267courses offered for grade 10 include: Grade 10 Canadian History in English & French, Grade 10 Civics in English & French, and Grade 10 First Nations, Métis and Inuit Studies in English.
2026/27courses offered for Grade 11 include: Grade 11 Anthropology, Psychology & Sociology (English & French), Grade 11 Genocide (English only) Grade 11 Law (English only), Grade 11 American Hsitory (French only), and Grade 11 Pop Music & Society (English only).
2026-2027 courses offered for Grade 12 include: Grade 12 Philosophy with a Gender Studies focus, Grade 12 Equity & Social Justice, Grade 12 Challenge & Change, Grade 12 Economics, Grade 12 Law, Grade 12 World History, Grade 12 World Issues (Geography), and Grade 12 Film Studies. All courses are only offered in English.
Indigenous Education at Harbord CI: the Social & Global Studies Department integrates education about First Nation Metis and Inuit Peoples into many of our courses. For those with a particular interest in Indigenous studies, we run a grade 10 history course, NAC2O, that covers Indigenous-focused history from pre-contact to present day.
