It is important to learn to breathe slowly and deeply so that we can calm ourselves and be in control of what we say and do. Slow, deep breathing slows our hearts, calms our bodies and calms our minds so that we can make good choices. WE CANNOT MAKE GOOD CHOICES WHEN WE ARE FEELING BIG EMOTIONS!
Calming breaths are easy... simply take three slow, deep breaths into your belly and three long, slow breaths out. If you are feeling really upset, you might need five breaths to calm down, that's OK! You can do this anywhere and anytime. Parents, try the breaths below with your children. We practise breathing at the end of gym, every day!
Remember, it is OK to feel annoyed, but it is NOT OK to use hurtful words or actions. When we feel annoyed or scared or frustrated, we can take three slow, deep breaths in and three long, slow breaths out to calm down... and THEN, when our brains can think more clearly, we can use words to solve the problem.
