GRADE 11 ACCOUNTING
THE BENEVOLENT CORPORATION – WRITTEN REPORT
Sometimes a prominent corporation will be very generous with the billions of dollars in revenues it rakes in year after year. Indeed, the board of directors of a profitable corporation can always choose to direct a portion of the firm’s earnings and/or other resources towards a number of worthwhile causes.
For this assignment, you will select one for-profit private or public corporation, Canadian or foreign, and then prepare a written report describing one or more of the firm’s recent philanthropic (charitable) efforts.
A charitable act may refer to any number of generous actions taken on behalf of a corporate entity for the benefit of others. Examples of charitable actions include cash or in-kind (non-cash) donations, event or team sponsorships, sharing of R & D results with competitors, improved pay and working conditions for overseas workers, providing merchandise at below-market prices, offering apprenticeship/mentorship programs, etc.
CIBC and their annual sponsorship of the CIBC Run for the Cure in support of breast canncer research is a good example of a corporation and a charitable event that it supports.
Before you commence this assignment, please provide me with the name of the corporation you intend to study in order to ensure there is no duplication of subject matter. * (not necessary for Goldkind virtual school students)
You should locate your research via one or more recent internet articles from online newspapers, journals or company websites.
Your written report must contain, in your own words and in complete sentences:
(i) a one-page summary of the facts (W5) contained in the article, followed by
(ii) a one-paragraph personal analysis in which you describe your personal opinions and attitudes (i.e., impressed or unimpressed and why) towards the corporation’s charitable actions.
Furthermore, please include website URL links to your source material (i.e., your articles) with your report. You should not submit a formal Works Cited list.
A professional title page is also required.
You may also choose to include any relevant imagery and/or charts/graphs to illustrate your report.
You will create your report using a Google Doc which you will ultimately share with me at brian.goldkind@tdsb.on.ca and remember to provide me with editing privileges.
This assignment is due Friday, April 9th at midnight.
