On February 13th and 14th, 2023, 17 Vanier students competed with over 6200 students in DECA’s provincial competition in downtown Toronto. Two of our students, Iqra Aga and Talha Choudhary, were awarded medals for placing in the top 15 finalists of their event. Congratulations to all of our students for your hard work and achievements!

Congratulations to Lenecia Walters, Sufia Arshad and Ngoc Minh Jennifer Nguyen on their second place win in the Intuit Lead with Cause: Social Innovation Challenge! The competition, which was held across 9 school districts in Canada and the USA, had 700 student participants tasked with a challenge to design an innovative solution to increase equitable access to entrepreneurship for underrepresented groups. The high school student teams worked for several months to create solutions designed to increase equitable access to entrepreneurship.
Our three member Vanier team won 2nd place by creating a super-smart toothbrush that ignites tele-dentistry so small-practice owners have equitable access to new clients, funding, government programs, and mentorship. Congratulations students on your amazing accomplishment!
1ST AND 2ND PLACE WINNERS IN OBEA CONTESTS!

Two business students from Georges Vanier Secondary School were award winners in the 2019-2020 OBEA (Ontario Business Educators Association) contests. Denise Araya, placed first in the Business Leadership competition and Vu Anh Thu placed second in the Savings and Investment Challenge. Congratulations Denise and Vu Anh!

Toronto Finance International (TFI), a public-private partnership between financial services (FS) organizations, post-secondary institutions and the government, organized a day of experiential learning for the students in Toronto District School Board. TD Securities, BMO, Scotiabank, Sun Life Financial, Deloitte and OMERS opened their doors for the students to learn about FinTech industries. Students from Georges Vanier visited Royal Bank of Canada on 88 Queens Quay West to learn how technology is driving innovation and potential opportunities for High School students. Visiting the innovation space and meeting the top tech talent at RBC was an exciting and memorable.
In the afternoon, students went on the tour of art exhibit at The Power Plant. Students saw Vivian Suter's first exhibition in Canada, La Canicula. Karla Black's Solo Exhibition generated lots of interesting discussion amongst the students. Learning about managing an art gallery and procurement of art was very different but interesting.

20 students competed at the DECA Regionals on November 16, 2018 at Cedarbrea C.I. Students trained and prepared for the competition during the weekly meetings. The challenge was an eye-opening experience for many Grade 9 students. The DECA Provincials will be held at Sheraton Centre on Friday, February 8, 2019.

On November 14, 2018, Grade 9 Business students, Erfan and Jonas, visited Canadian Forces to experience what it is like to participate in Take Our Kids to Work Day. The students were introduced to the careers in Dental and Medical office, Fitness Training (modified Force Test (lifting and carrying sandbags and rushes), Mechanic shop (includes tours of various vehicles including some of our Armoured Vehicles), Military Police and Small Arms Trainer (SAT). SAT used weapon systems but did NOT fire actual ammunition; they shoot at a projector screen with balloons on it.
Bay Street Deconstructed is careers workshop with the focus on financial industry. The workshop offers students a differentiated approach of fun and interactive experiential learning. Careers explored are the areas of personal and commercial banking, corporate and investment banking, sales and trading, equity research, economics, insurance, investment management (wealth and asset), and operations.
Grade 10, 11, 12 Business students visited LoyaltyOne, an international marketing firm at the Globe and Mail Centre on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 through a program called: World of Choices, a one-day event that brings high school students together with career mentors from a variety of career paths. Students learned about developing a personal brand and how to identify career paths through intimate conversations with mentors where they found out more about roles and opportunities in various fields in marketing.
Shayan Rizwan and Bima Purwantoro placed 3rd place at the University of Toronto Market Simulation Challenge presented by the BMO Financial Group Finance Research and Trading Lab. They competed against 25 other teams from GTA.
The High School Market Simulation Challenge provides high school students with an introduction to simulation based learning and challenges them to compete against each other. Students are introduced to financial markets.
April 27, 2018, Seneca College
JA Titan Challenge is a one-day business simulation game held at Seneca College. Students from Georges Vanier competed against 300 students from GTA area schools. In the morning, students learned about six critical economic and management decisions through engaging activities: price, production, R&D, marketing, charitable giving and capital investment. After lunch, students showcased their learning in a simulated game where they competed for $1000 post-secondary scholarships and the title of JA Titan of the Industry.

Shabrana Aman won the gold medal at the TDSB Skills Competition in the category of 'Prepared Speech'. Shabrana talked about the importance of skills in today's workplace. She will be representing Toronto District School Board at the Ontario Provincial Skills Competition.
20 students participated in DECA Business Competition.
Hydar Zartash, Sam Bezak, and Khanh Nguyen won ribbons for top 10 performance for written exam and role play.
The following students will move on to the Provincials: Hydar Zartash, Khanh Nguyen, Richard Bezak, Andrew Armstrong, Mohammad Ayan Chhipa, Chirag Rana, Jawad Mohammed and Spencer Healy.
On October 3, 2017, Business Studies students had a wonderful outing to Wilfrid Laurier University and Toyota Plant. Everyone enjoyed learning about university life at Wilfrid Laurier and 'kaizen'. Kaizen is a Japanese word which means a better way. It's Toyota's manufacturing process philosophy.
Two business students from Georges Vanier Secondary School received the top honours at the OBEA Student Awards Luncheon on September 30, 2017 at the Holiday Inn Hotel. Ahalya Ramji, placed second in the Grade 11 Marketing Competition and Spencer Medri placed third in the Grade 12 International Business category.
OBEA (Ontario Business Educators Association) invites over 25000 students in Ontario to compete to demonstrate their excellence. During the 2016-17 school year, 20 students from Georges Vanier Secondary School participated in Accounting, Marketing, International Business, and Poster Competitions. Congratulations Ahalya and Spencer!
A student project, E-rase the E-waste, was invited to the final stage of Dragons' Nest, an entrepreneurship competition (much like Dragon's Den on CBC) on Wednesday, May 17 at the North York Civic Centre. There were approximately 150 video pitches submitted in the GTA alone. Georges Vanier students made it to the finals as one of the following 8 finalist schools: Richview Collegiate Institute (x2), Etobicoke School of the Arts (x2), St. Augustine CHS, Applewood Heights Secondary School and North Park Secondary School.
Adena Singh won a silver medal at the TDSB Skills Competition in the category of 'Prepared Speech'. Adena demonstrated excellence in leadership and commitment to success.
