Students at Frank Oke have the opportunity to enter the Co-Op Program in their senior years. Students are recommended and selected by staff, administration and with the support of parents. Co-Op program staff will interview potential students before we make a final decision.
Our current class of Co-Op students are working at places like Canadian Tire, Shoppers Drug Mart, Ruffin's Pet Centre and the Bloor West Food Bank.
Students attend their Co-op Placement four days per week from 10am to 2pm.
One day per week students are in the classroom where we focus on developing their employability skills, share their work experiences with each other, work on their resumes and plan for their future employment.
In the Co-op class we help students create a professional, up-to-date resume with references from school staff and at least one manager or supervisor from their Co-op Placement.
The goal is to have students use their resume to reach out to workplaces in their neighbourhood and apply for part-time and summer jobs.
Students arrive at Frank Oke in the morning, take attendance in class, get their bus tickets, change into their work clothes/safety shoes and take the TTC to get to their jobs.
All of our placements are accessible by TTC and within 20 – 30 minutes of the school.
An Educational Assistant for Co-op accompanies the students to their placements and works with them every day.
Some students require support navigating the TTC for the first time. Some may need additional support at their job.
The EA also observes the students at work and takes detailed notes. EA comments are used to track each student’s work habits, evaluate their work, and share with them areas for improvement.
The EA speaks directly with placement supervisors and provides updates to parents.
We do our best to match students with jobs that would be appropriate for them, safe for them and challenging.
We also make sure the businesses we work with are aware and receptive to working with students who have special needs.
