The Captions & Graphics workspace in Premiere Pro provides a powerful workflow that allows you to create titles, graphics, and animations directly within Premiere Pro.
To access the Graphics workspace: Click Captions & Graphics in the workspace bar at the top of the screen or, from the main window, select Window > Workspaces > Captions & Graphics.
Note: For video to show behind a title, you must place the title on a track above the video that you want to have behind the title.
If you are creating a title for a specific piece of footage, it may be useful to view a frame of that footage in the drawing area as you create the title. Displaying footage is helpful if you want to precisely position a title or compare title and footage colors.
To add titles you need to have a sequence open on the timeline in Premiere Pro. Move the playhead to the frame where you want to add the title. Select the Text tool to begin.
To create a new title:
Select the Type tool.
Type your text in the Program Monitor and notice that a Title item appears in the timeline above the clip.
Adjust the appearance of the Title in the Properties Panel, where you can customize your title with fonts, colors, and styling options.
Use the Selection Tool to move or resize text and shape layers directly in the Program Monitor.
You can also:
Drag to extend or shorten the Title item on the Timeline (the default duration is 5 seconds).
Select shape tools to add graphical elements.
Create a copy of your title by holding the Alt key while you drag your title to another location on the Timeline. You can then edit the text in the duplicated title.
Though static titles, graphics, and logos may suffice for some projects, many others require titles that move across the footage. (Titles that move vertically over the footage are called rolls. Titles that move horizontally are called crawls.)
Note: The length of the title in the Timeline window determines the speed of the roll or crawl. The more you increase the title clip length, the slower the scroll.
Use the Motion effect to position, scale, or rotate a clip within the video frame. By default, each clip that you add to the Timeline panel has the Motion effect applied as a fixed effect. You can view and adjust the Motion effect properties in the Effect Controls panel by clicking the triangle next to the Motion name.
When the Motion effect is selected in the Effect Controls panel, you can manipulate a clip to create an animation in the Program Monitor. To animate a clip in the Program Monitor, follow these steps:
Select a clip in the Timeline panel.
Do one of the following:
Select the Motion effect in the Effect Controls panel.
Double-click on the image in the Program Monitor.
Handles appear around the clip’s perimeter in the Program Monitor.
Move the current-time indicator in either the Timeline panel or the Effect Controls panel to the time where you want to start the animation—any frame between the clip’s current In point and its Out point.
Click the triangle next to the Motion control in the Effects Controls panel.
Click the Toggle Animation button next to the Position control to set the first keyframe.
In the Program Monitor, change the keyframe value by positioning the pointer near any of the clip’s eight square handles to use any of the following pointer tools:
The selection pointer to set the position value.
The rotate pointer to set the rotation value.
The scale pointer to set the scale value.
Move the current-time indicator, in either the timeline or the Effect Controls panel, to the time at which you want to define a new value for the property (and hence new keyframe).
Manipulate the clip in the Program Monitor to set a new value for each property for which you set keyframes in step 3. A new Keyframe icon appears in the Effect Controls panel at the current-time indicator.
Repeat steps 5 and 6 as needed.
In the Effect Controls panel, expand the property (Position, Scale, Rotation, or Anti-flicker) and drag the Bezier handle to control the acceleration of change for that property.
Select the Type tool and draw a text box in the Program Monitor and notice that a Title item appears in the timeline above the clip.
Adjust the appearance of the Title in the Properties Panel, where you can customize your title with fonts, colors, and styling options.
Use the Selection Tool to move or resize text and shape layers directly in the Program Monitor.
Without any layers in the graphic selected, scroll to the bottom of the Properties panel and tick Roll.
Make any other adjustment that are necessary.
