Part 1: Here on Earth

Making Sense of the Things in the Sky

Introduction

Diagnostic: Take a google quiz to see what your class already knows about space, and what they want to know/explore. Alternatively, do a KWL chart for the unit or section.

Cultures and the Sky

Investigate with your students the Constellations, Sun, Moon (or other celestial objects) and how they were viewed around the world. Check out the resources section for student friendly resources you can use.

Have students choose 3 creation stories to dissect and summarize them using the SWBST chart to the left. Here are some playlists of stories and folklore. Star Stories. Moon Stories, Sun Stories.

As a creative writing project students can create their own story on a constellation they invented, or another celestial object in the sky.

Making Sense of Objects in the Sky

Check out the flipped classroom activity to the right to have students investigate how peoples in the past made sense of patterns in the stars, moon, and sun.
