Cross Curricular Inquiry + Projects

Art + Space

Art Project: Create a physical art piece with any media (drawing, diorama, poster, video), or dramatic representation of what life would look like on another planet. It can be human life on another planet or something else! Look up knowledge on earth-like planets that can sustain life here.

Art Activity: Create a mission patch for a future NASA mission. Make sure to include the names of those you would take on the mission with you!

Drama Activity: From start to finish, without talking, show through drama the procedures to set up and conduct a spacewalk. Use this literacy resource or this video series from NASA to gain background knowledge.

Music Project: Have students choose a planet and listen to Gustav Holst, ‘The Planets’. They will then describe how that planet inspired the piece and what feelings they get from listening to the music. Take a look at the assignment and rubric.

Literature + Space

Guess the Planet Game: Using only adjectives, describe a certain planet or dwarf planet, and have a partner or rest of the class guess which planet or dwarf planet it is! As an added challenge, only use 3 adjectives to describe your planet, none of which can be colour.

Creative writing Project: Create a fictional story of you being selected for a space mission. How would you feel? What technologies would help you survive in space? What is your mission? Fix a satellite, go to mars, go to a moon base? Describe what you would need to take with you. What dangers may lay ahead of you? These Resources may help you: Space suit. Living in Space. Canadian Link

NASA Space Story Creator: Create a story by inputting random verbs, adjectives, and nouns. Let the hilarity ensue.

Creative Writing Story: Create a story based on a constellation you created. Use descriptive words and make sure your story has a moral behind it.

Social Studies + Space

Communities in Canada - Past and Present

How have peoples in the past viewed celestial objects? Were they gods, stories, people? Investigate a nations view on them and share what you find with the class. Investigate First Nation stories and how the content revolved around their culture and beliefs.

Canadas Interactions with the Global Community

How have global contributions helped further space exploration? How can satellites help the world out? How do they impact your everyday life (communication, internet, location, ect.)

Costs and Benefits of Space Exploration: Have a class debate on the costs and benefits of Space Exploration globally and/or in Canada. Collaboratively create a Venn diagram on costs and benefits. What global causes can Canada reallocate its funds to? What effects would this have on the benefits of Canada's Space program?

Math + Space

Inquiry Planetary Age: Find out your age on another planet!

Relative Distances + SIzes: Find out the relative distances of celestial objects in Astronomical units, Kilometers and light years. Use the appropriate unit for various distances and sizes of objects. Activity..

Other Sciences + Space

Flight Inquiry: Why are Spacex and the Space Shuttles the only spacecrafts that have wings? Do spacecraft use Bernoulli's principle in space? How and why are spacecrafts aerodynamic?

Biodiversity Inquiry: How does the earths tilt give us seasons on Earth? How does this impact biodiversity around the world? How do the seasons impact biodiversity locally?

Energy Inquiry: Did you know the Canadarm used the same amount of energy as a single lightbulb? https://www.nasa.gov/stemonstrations-solar-energy.html
