TDSB Homework Policy

"There is a strong connection between reading to or with elementary children every day in English or in one’s first language and student achievement. As a result, homework assigned in the early grades shall more often take the form of reading, playing a variety of games, having discussions and interactive activities such as building and cooking with the family. In the late Primary and Junior grades, effective homework may begin to take the form of independent work. In both cases, homework assigned for completion, practice, preparation or extension should be clearly articulated and differentiated to reflect the unique needs of the child."

This month's students can bring in an object of their choice. See the Google Calendar above to find out when your child's special day is.

Scholastic Literacy Pro Trial

John English now has a trial subscription to Scholastic Literacy Pro which allows students to read a variety of ebooks at their reading level. Students will receive a unique username and password to access the ebooks. Teachers, parents, and students will be able to track student progress in reading. Students can record themselves reading and share this with their teacher. There are also quizzes at the end of a book to monitor reading comprehension.

To access the site go to: https://slz01.scholasticlearningzone.com/slz-portal/#/login3/CAN73DK

and enter your child's username and password.

Please provide feedback about the program as this is a trial and we will be assessing on whether to purchase the program.

Reflex: Online Math Practice

John English has a subscription to Reflex Math. The goal of Reflex Math is to help students master addition and subtraction facts (and later multiplication and division) through games. As students login and play, I can track their progress, see what facts they've mastered and what they are working on. I can also increase or decrease the difficulty. You can play Reflex on a desktop or laptop or download the Reflex app on your handheld device.

A letter was sent home last week explaining the program and contained your child's username and password.

Scholastic Book Orders

Ordering from our Scholastic Book Club is a great way to build your home library as well as a fundraising initiative for our classroom. We receive books for our classroom library when parents/grandparents order books for their little one. We also have parent pay (see attached flyer) to make payment easier for everyone.

Library Book Exchange

This past Wednesday (Day 2 on our cycle) students borrowed 1 or 2 books from the school library. Students are responsible for bringing these books home and are encouraged to read them by themselves or with someone for one week. Every Day 2, students should bring back their library books to renew or exchange them. If students do not return their books, they will not be able to take a new one. Please check the Google Calendar for when book exchange is.
