How do I join Band?

Students start band in 6th grade. If you wish to join, make sure you sign up for 6th grade band!

What instruments can you start on?

You may start on Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, or Baritone. Students wishing to play saxophone, tuba, or percussion must start on one of the beginning instruments first.

I can't afford and instrument. Can I still join?

Yes! The school has some instruments available to borrow. The availability of your instrument of choice is not guaranteed.

How are percussionist selected?

Percussionist are selected from an audition. Students wishing to play percussion must demonstrate proficiency in counting, reading treble and bass clef, as well as coordination.

Can I play a sport and do band?

Yes! Most sports do not interfere with band. Ms. Canter was a 3 sport student athlete in high school and believes that students benefit from both sports and music!

When can I join marching band?

Most students join marching band in 8th grade. However, if there is space, 7th grade students may join the marching band pit.

How much does band cost?

Middle school band only has the minimal cost of supplies (reeds, books, oil, etc.). Marching band fees typically run $175 for new members and $100 for returning members who do not need to replace any of their marching materials.

Do I need to attend band camp?

If you are in marching band, you must attend band camp! Band camp is where you learn the basics of marching, bond with your bandmates, and begin learning the show!

Does band go on trips?

Yes! Marching band attends every Rosman football game, 2-3 competitions, and 3 Christmas parades. Further, marching band goes on a big trip every 4 years. High School Symphonic band attends competitions and also goes on a big trip every 4 years. Middle school band takes smaller trips to see concerts and compete in WNC competitions.

What is colorguard?

Colorguard is an important part of the marching band. They help tell the story on the field visually (dance, acting, flags, rifles, and sabres). Colorguard is a course at RHS that focuses on dance and equipment technique.

How do I join colorguard?

High school students wishing to take colorguard should sign up for the course!
