School Board Approves Building Contracts, Transylvania Times, January 27, 2020
“The Transylvania County Board of Education unanimously approved the contracts with Clark Nexsen and Vannoy Construction at its meeting Tuesday evening. Clark Nexsen is the architectural firm and Vannoy Construction is the CMAR (construction manager at risk) that will design and construct the new buildings and renovations at Brevard High School and Rosman High/Middle School.
“The Board of Education approved the contracts in August of last year, but the contracts also had to be reviewed and approved by the Board of Commissioners, since the latter has the fiduciary responsibility to oversee the $68 million bond package that was approved by voters in November of 2018.
“The commissioners waited to approve the contracts until soil sample reports at the two campuses were completed. Once those reports came back as expected, the commissioners approved the contracts, with a few minor changes, at their Jan. 13 meeting. Board of Education attorney John Henning said he was “very comfortable” recommending approval of the two contracts.”
School Board Talks Building Options, Transylvania Times, October 24, 2019
“During an update on the proposed new construction for Brevard High and Rosman High/Middle schools Monday evening, the Transylvania County Board of Education was informed by Board Chairwoman Tawny McCoy that extending Rosman High across the street to property in front of the school was no longer an option.
“One of the options to renovate and expand Rosman High/Middle School with money from the $68 million bond passed last November was to close the street in front of school to general traffic and build a multi-story wing over the road, thus connecting the current structure to other school buildings, such as the field house.
“McCoy said the town of Rosman met a couple of weeks ago and decided not to close the road in front of Rosman High/Middle School. That effectively eliminated the option of having part of the school be on the other side of the current road, which would have addressed safety concerns about students crossing the street.”
