The Board of Education has established a School Bond Construction Committee (SBCC) in conjunction with the Transylvania County Board of Commissioners. Monthly meetings of the SBCC are open to the public, and subject to the North Carolina Open Meetings Law.
While there is not public comment at SBCC meetings, the Board of Education makes public comment available at regular meetings. Meetings for public discussion of new school construction plans and designs will be announced as they become available.
(BREVARD, NC—April 24, 2019) The Transylvania County Board of Education is one step closer to selecting the firms to help them complete renovations and new construction, funded by the $68 million school bond which passed in November 2018.
At their April 11 meeting, the seven members of the school bond construction committee discussed their earlier group interviews of eight architectural and five CMAR (construction manager at risk) firms. Members also shared findings from their attempts to contact references provided by each of the firms.
Committee chair Norris Barger asked each member to name their top three in each category, for those preferences to be folded into one recommendation from the committee as a whole to the school board.
The committee used a ranked voting method to award the most points for a first-place vote, fewer for second place, and least for third place.
The final tally for CMAR firms provided a clear 1-2-3 list of recommendations: Vannoy Construction ranked first, followed by the partnership of Beverly-Grant and Barnhill, with Edifice General Contractors as the third choice by the committee.
While the voting by members was more widely dispersed for the eight architectural firms, three also rose to the top for recommendation to the school board. Two Asheville firms tied for first place among committee members—Clark Nexsen Architects and the partnership of PFA Architects and LS3P Associates—with Charlotte-based ADW Architects in third place.
Barger told members that the Board of Education will consider the recommendations at their regularly scheduled business meeting on Monday, May 6.
