Book List

In the works we have selected to teach, the authors intend for readers to contemplate the serious moral, ethical, social, religious, or philosophical questions humans face over the course of their lives. BHS English teachers present these works so that students may begin to take part in conversations about what it means—and what it takes—for a person to be “good.” Your child should both stand on your family's values and listen to other perspectives while reading and discussing these works. Please respond when your child asks you questions about the “life lessons” these works may suggest. Because they are young, children may rush to judgment and oversimplify how the author depicts the complicated struggle between good and evil. Not finishing the book will certainly lead to such confusion. We encourage you, the parent, to preview these books so you can make informed decisions about how to answer your child's questions. Please read the books completely to determine how the author resolves the characters' struggles. Feel free to arrange a conference with your child's teacher and/or the English department chair in advance of the assigned reading if you have concerns about a selection. A chart of titles arranged by grade level and descriptions of the books are available in the document posted below. 

Please note that the English department is currently engaged in revising our curriculum in conjunction with Rosman High School in order to create a more consistent, coherent scope and sequence of learning for all students in Transylvania County. The selections and the grade level in which they are taught are subject to change.
