Welcome to Middle School Math at TCPS! Through our TCPS mathematics program, students increase their interests, develop their skills, and emerge as problem-solvers. Cooperative learning groups and investigations allow students to speculate and verify; find and impose structure; and engage in exercises of abstract reasoning. Students learn to transition from intuitive thinking to concrete operations, and to represent mathematical structures symbolically. Each student will develop a solid understanding of basic geometrical ideas; learn how to solve one and two step equations; and master operations of integers and rational numbers. It is imperative that students have a strong foundations of operations with integers, fractions, and decimals for their success of solving equations and inequalities.
Students will be engaged through various activities and lessons which will be designed for visual, auditory and kinesthetic learners.
Math is all about process, logic, problem solving, patterns, proof, concepts and creativity. It's everything from zero to infinity. While often feared, it can really be quite fun or at least interesting. It's a human activity which happens to describe the universe quite well. It's very practical in solving problems in engineering, technology, economics, finance and commerce. It's also an essential partner with science. It's also beautiful. Our goal is to learn and enjoy math in a safe, fun and focused environment. Enjoy!
We will be using digital and print resources from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for our middle school curriculum. Our 6th grade students will study the Into Math Advanced 1 course materials and the 7th grade students will work with the Into Math Advanced 2 materials while our 8th grade students will complete Into Algebra 1. Our focus is on developing a deep understanding of concepts in order to develop an appreciation, if not a love for, the world of math all around us. For details about topics covered, see the Curriculum page.
