When students returned to the library we watched the video, "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore" and then we read the book. When asked which version they liked better, they realized the book can reveal more background information than the movie, while others liked the animation version. It was a very good discussion.
In this loosely related version of Snow White, Stella the storyteller is jealous when Joe Bright begins winning audiences with his wonderful tales. When she tricks him into leaving town, he stumbles upon the home of the seven genre dudes, brothers who care for various types of books at the local library. Nonfiction is one genre, with folk literature and poetry assigned to two other brothers. Other siblings are the caretakers for mysteries, historical fiction, realistic fiction, and science fiction. After each dude describes his specialty, he asks Joe to be the library's storyteller. When Stella learns of this, she's angrier than ever. Using magic, she makes Joe forget his stories, but his seven friends help him out (further describing their genres in the process). In the end, the king decrees that both performers should travel together "spreading the joy of stories." - School Library Journal

Although the books are not creepy the illustrations are great!
Snowmen At Christmas- It's Christmas Eve and people are snug in their beds, but something is stirring outside. The snowmen are preparing to celebrate! Under the glow of moonlight, all the snow families are slipping away to gather in the town square for a night of caroling, dancing, and an exciting visit from the snowman Santa Claus.
Snowmen At Night-Have you ever built a snowman and discovered the next day that his grin has gotten a little crooked, or his tree-branch arms have moved? And you've wondered . . . what do snowmen do at night?
Snowmen All Year- In this lighthearted, funny follow-up to the previous Snowmen bestsellers, our young narrator dreams of a non-melting snowman friend who joins him for all of the year's events. They ride a roller coaster together, dive into a swimming pool in the summer, watch the Fourth of July fireworks, and trick-or-treat on Halloween.
Snowmen At Work- Snowmen don't just play all night--they have jobs to do, just like the parents of human kids. Dentists replace missing coal from snowman smiles while pet store owners help pair snowkids with their very own snowpuppy or snowfish to love. The pizza man delivers frozen pizza, and factory workers make the coolest toys in town.
