What about voltage / plugs / electronics in Thailand?
- Outlets in Thailand are either the round holes or a combination round/flat. All of your North American plugs (flat prongs) will fit in the hybrid outlets. Big Tree and many other apartments will have this type. However, other places (some hotels) in Thailand use only the round plugs. For this, look into purchasing an outlet converter before moving (note: this is different than a voltage converter, which is rarely necessary).
- The voltage in Thailand is 220 volts compared to 110 volts used in the United States. Most modern electronics, iphone, camera and notebook/laptop computer chargers for example, are rated from 100 volts to 240 volts, so work fine worldwide. Be sure to check the label on yours though. Many items like dvd players, hair dryers or computer speakers are not rated for the dual voltages and will pop and spark once when you plug them into the 230 volts here! Again, check the label on the item!
- Electronic items such as stereo systems, camcorders, cameras, portable CD players, notebook computers are about 20-30 percent more expensive here. Famous brands such as Sony, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sanyo, Panasonic, GE, and Yamaha are sold in malls and market areas. We have Tesco-Lotus and Big C super stores which are in the Walmart/Target genre.
