At the symposium, delegates were provided with a QR Code directing them to a website with resources discussed during the day. This is a collection of student leadership resources that were made available to delegates.

Candidate Application Form Samples (From 2022 and 2021)
In 2022, we reduced the number of questions on the application form. We debated whether or not this created a barrier for some students to run for student council and decided that 100 words was not enough to create a significant barrier.
Election Form
We use a Google Form and iPads/computers to collect student council votes. Students must vote for exactly five candidates. Try out the form below. If you would like a copy for yourself, click here and make a copy.
Voter Information Cards
We provided personalized voter information cards to all students in the school. We used the Microsoft Word mail merge function to create the cards. I have attached the Word file, if you are interested in giving it a try. We used the data from the password and ID Excel file the Board sends to schools at the beginning of the year. You can ask your principal for this list. (In SIS, you can download the Birthday Report to get a complete list).
Election Day Setup
Announcing Results
Prior to announcing successful candidates to the school, all candidates participate in a special secret ceremony at the end of a school day to receive their participation letters. All the letters are the same, with successful candidates receiving a sticker on their letter with the official student council seal. Students are asked to not open their letters until they leave the school. A version of a letter we have used in the past is below.
Executive Committee Elections
Following the election of the general members of student council, elected student council members vote to decide the executives of the student council. The rules of the process are below.
Executive Committee Google Form
We use a Google Form and iPads to vote for the Executive Committee. So that you are prepared in advance, start the form with all candidates in each position and delete the students who are not interested in running. A sample of the form is below. If you would like a copy for yourself, click here and make a copy.
On-Call Teacher Duty Schedule
In order to provide students with some independence in scheduling meetings, including last-minute meetings, we recruited teachers who would make themselves available to supervise students on an as-needed basis. Student council members are responsible for letting teachers know they intend to have a meeting during the teachers on-call time. The teacher needs to be present but does not have to facilitate the meeting.
More recently, we have been allowing students to use the conference room next to the office.
