Communication Technology / Media Arts
This course examines communications technology from a media perspective. Students will develop knowledge and skills as they design and produce media projects in the areas of live, recorded, and graphic communications. These areas may include TV, video, and movie production; radio and audio production; print and graphic communications; photography; digital imaging; broadcast journalism; and interactive new media. Students will also develop an awareness of related environmental and societal issues, and will explore college and university programs and career opportunities in the various communications technology fields. This course also focuses on the development of media arts skills through the production of art works involving traditional and emerging technologies, tools, and techniques such as new media, computer animation, and web environments. Students will explore the evolution of media arts as an extension of traditional art forms, use the creative process to produce effective media art works, and critically analyse the unique characteristics of this art form. Students will examine the role of media artists in shaping audience perceptions of identity, culture, and values.
In this course you will build on your knowledge of computer arts and learn two additional industry standard programs such as Adobe Animate, Dreamweaver and InDesign. Students will study Digital Photography, Graphic Design, Animation and Web Design.
Prerequisite: Media Arts, Grade 10, Open (ASM 201)
Applied Photography
This introductory and exploratory photography course focuses on building student interest, skill and creativity. Students will learn photographic conventions, techniques and terminology through the use of responsible practices with traditional and emerging technologies. Students will use the critical analysis process to reflect on., and interpret, a variety of photographic images. This course will explore personal histories in a larger context of meaning, and will allow students the opportunity to explore the work of a variety of artists, who will aid in their understanding of how art and photographs in particular, reflect the culture and values of the societies in which they are created.
In this course you will get the opportunity to learn how to use a traditional SLR 35mm camera, black and white film, and learn how to process your own film and how to print your own pictures in a traditional darkroom.
Prerequisite: Any Grade Nine or Ten Visual Arts, Design, Media Arts or Communications Technology course.
Film and Video
This course will develop the knowledge and skills that enable students to communicate ideas, feelings and beliefs through the artistic medium of film and video. Through the critical analysis process, students will appreciate the vision of important Canadian and international directors, filmmakers and artists. Through the creative process students will be encouraged to discover their own unique vision as an artist and film maker. With practice in creative and innovative problem solving, students will prepare themselves to meet the challenges of an ever increasingly complex technological society.
Students will learn about the foundations of film, how to use digital video camera, microphones, and how to use industry standard software such as Adobe Premier Pro.
Prerequisite: Any Grade Nine or Ten Visual Arts, Design, Media Arts or Communications Technology course.
Applied Journalism
IN THIS COURSE STUDENTS WILL WORK ON AND COMPLETE THE SCHOOL YEARBOOK.

Students will also develop an awareness of related environmental and societal issues, and will explore college and university programs and career opportunities in the various communications technology fields.
This course emphasizes the key elements necessary for students to complete a journalistic publication. Students will master the skills and demonstrate leadership in all aspects of yearbook production, including layout and graphic design; photography; copy writing, caption writing, headline writing and other journalistic techniques; desktop publishing and related software applications; marketing and advertising; budgeting and financial management; interaction with local businesses; teamwork and organizational skills; and time management skills. Students will acquire the necessary tools for success in the publishing industry. Students will study aspects of journalism, learn about the issues within the realm of publication and focus their studies on the production and completion of the annual school yearbook.
Students will be given the opportunity to achieve all of the expectations of the broad-based course (TGJ3M1) with an emphasis on yearbook design fundamentals and skills.
