In the Bible, Saul’s daughter, Michal, mocks her husband King David for his dancing, her public criticism inviting laughter. Author Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid’s Tale) famously said, “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them.” And feminist activist Gloria Steinem said something similar: “Men fear ridicule the way women fear violence.”
