About the Project
This multimodal project focuses on student-centered assignments given by teachers at two schools, Hua Yu School (HYS) in New York City and A Girls' Senior High School (AGSH) in Hsinchu City. These assignments have adopted the idea of youth participatory action research (YPAR), but in a form that is different from action research. They can be viewed as preparatory works of YPAR because they require students to bring personal experiences and interests into the classroom and become part of their learning content. Through these assignments, students can apply what they have learned in class and gain new knowledge from their works. However, the assignments are not yet YPAR because they are initiated by teachers, and they do not require students to conduct what is regarded as academic research. Instead, they are projects of a smaller scale and have simpler procedures than YPAR.
