Conversations Across Cultures
Reimagining the Education of the Artist
November 18-20, 2022

Online Zoom Symposium
Post-pandemic reimagining of Higher Education has accelerated long simmering trends that now embrace how we think about the education of the artist and artist teachers. Debates about what it means to be an artist suggest a new plurality in our definitions of art itself that is fundamentally reorienting how we think about the place of art in the world. Art Schools have become central to the interweaving of local and global knowledge offering new perspectives and professional possibilities to aspiring artists.
Within this fast-moving transitional framework, the 2022 session of Conversations Across Cultures poses four questions for thoughtful reflection:
Who are the students now entering this expanding world of the Art School?
How is the move towards interdisciplinary and project-based teaching and learning reshaping the Art School experience?
What role (s) is the Art School playing in developing thriving cultural communities?
To what extent is the education of the artist re-energizing, reshaping, even creating new professional career opportunities?
Contributors to this session of CAC will include faculty from Teachers College Columbia University and from The Maryland Institute College of Art.
Please join us and give your voice to this important dialogue.
CAC is open to all TC and MICA faculty and students whose voices are integral to shaping our collective future. The conversations that engage educators and artists in higher education place in question the challenges we must meet together in these fast changing times.
