Art School as a partner with/in thriving cultural communities: A view from Baltimore
Learn about some ways in which the Maryland Institute College of Art is working to, as the school’s mission states, “thrive with Baltimore.” Focusing on the graduate level, Salazar will share a number of recent initiatives and invite attendees to consider the implications for art schools working with/in communities today.
Stacey Salazar is the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). A college art educator for nearly 30 years, she has received professional recognition for her teaching and research, including the National Art Education Association’s Manuel Barkan Memorial Award for research, the Maryland Higher Education Art Educator of the Year, the MICA Trustee Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching, and a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award for Visual Art: Works on Paper Stacey’s single-authored book from Teachers College Press (2021), A Guide to Teaching Art at the College Level, has been adopted as a primary text for graduate seminars and faculty workshops across the United States. Stacey currently serves on the NAEA Research Commission, on the editorial board for Studies in Art Education, and as associate editor for Art, Design & Communication in Higher Education.
Stacey joined the full-time faculty at MICA in 2007 as Professor of Art Education and Coordinator of the Graduate Teaching Internship Program. In 2014 she was appointed Director of the Master of Arts in Art Education low-residency program, and in Fall 2018 she was named Interim Associate Dean for Curriculum & Assessment, a role she occupied until January of 2020, when she was appointed Interim Vice Provost of Graduate Studies. In June of 2020 she assumed the continuing role of Vice Provost. In this role Stacey serves as the educational and administrative leader of the graduate division of the College, which includes 14 programs across a range of fine art, media, design, art education, and socially engaged arts programs. Stacey holds a Doctorate of Education in Art and Art Education from Columbia University Teachers College, an M.A.T. from MICA, an M.F.A. in Painting from Towson University (MD), and a B.A. from Randolph-Macon College (VA).
