TOPICS
Designing Your Digital Learning Environment
One of the most challenging aspects of designing a course for online delivery is not trying to recreate what happens in the classroom, but completely re-imagining teaching and learning that takes place within a digital context. How do the needs of students learning online differ from the needs of students sitting in front of you in a classroom? How do you go from focusing on what online learning is not, to what it can be? We will explore these questions and more and along the way, provide you with practical strategies for planning and presenting an engaging and effective online learning experience while avoiding common pitfalls in online learning design.
Exploring & Assessing Instructional Technologies to Meet Instructional Objectives
We start off with closely looking at some of the guiding principles behind choosing tools and analyze how our use of tools align with those principles. Following, we will focus on some essential functions within Canvas and best practices for making use of those functions. We will also discuss how to use Canvas for creating narratives, establishing presence, and facilitating asynchronous activities. Lastly, we will learn some tools and techniques to make learning content and activities more interactive.
Video Production for Educators
Participants will learn how to “design” an online teaching persona—that is, a complete audio/visual representation that students (and the public) are more likely to make a “connection” with. Additionally, participants will be introduced to video editing software, learn about the importance of aesthetics and camera angles, lighting/audio techniques on a budget, and how to make any cellphone into a portable studio.
