EF Online launched in 2020 to provide professional development opportunities to TBP students and members during a global pandemic. It has evolved into an annual series of webinars covering a broad range of skills essential for personal and professional success. EF Online sessions are organized and facilitated by volunteers, offered free of charge, and everyone may participate.

How to Target Your Resume

About the Session: Rachel and Joey are passionate about crafting resumes targeted to both the position and the company when applying to a new job. Their presentation will break down an example job description and discuss how to take your resume from generic to specific. Your resume is valuable real estate, what information is contained and how it is presented can be the difference between getting an interview or not.


About the Presenter: Joey Alexander (CA U ’06) has a B.S. in Computer Engineering from the University of California, Davis. He has performed a variety of IT related roles over a 15-year career. Currently, Joey is the Director of Information Technology for a local data company in Sacramento, CA. Prior to this role, Joey’s experience was in IT at a K-12 education agency. Joey has also served as a TBP chapter secretary and president of the Sacramento Valley Alumni Chapter. Rachel Alexander (CA U ’15) has a B.S. in Civil Engineering (the other type of CE) from California State University, Sacramento. She currently works for Sacramento County Department of Airports as an Assistant Engineer. After serving in her collegiate chapter at CA Upsilon, Rachel has served as president and secretary of the Sacramento Valley Alumni Chapter. Additionally, Rachel currently serves on the Executive Council as the Vice President of the Association.

Preparing for & Deciding When to Go to Grad School

About the Session: Having a graduate degree in your future can be very important for many reasons. Deciding when to go to graduate school can be a very difficult decision. The options include staying in school after completing the BS degree, working full-time and going to school part-time, or working for a few years and going back to school full-time. We will look at the ASEE Profiles to learn about the size and demographics of all engineering graduate programs. Come prepared to ask questions and interact with the speaker!


About the Presenter: Dr. Bruce Lindvall is the assistant dean for graduate studies, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Northwestern University, and is the Northwestern GEM University representative serving on the GEM Board of Directors. Bruce is responsible for the management and growth of existing and future graduate degree programs at McCormick. He is also responsible for the student environment which includes 1000 PhD students and nearly 600 MS students.Before joining Northwestern, he worked at the College Board, the University of Kansas, and Purdue University. He has a BS in Mathematics, an MS in Guidance and Counseling, and a PhD in Educational Administration, all from Purdue University.

About the Session: Everyone hears how important growing your network is, but no one ever teaches you how to do it. Simply put, networking is meeting new people, adding value to their lives, staying in touch long-term, and leveraging others for help. This talk will cover career-targeted networking (e.g., job searching, professional society leadership positions, scholarships, research proposals) and broad networking for personal interests (e.g., side hustles, hobbies, sports, dating).


About the Presenter: Amy Kurr is a polymer engineer with a B.S. from Iowa State University and an M.S. from Case Western Reserve University. She spent two years at Schneider Electric as an electromechanical design engineer and is currently completing her Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee - Knoxville. She's passionate about helping students streamline their way to success through effective and efficient networking.

About the Session: Join the Director of Scholarships and Fellowships, Dr. Sally Steadman, for an overview of Tau Beta Pi's fellowship programs for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in engineering. Learn what makes a strong application and get answers to your questions!


About the Presenter: Dr. Sally G. Steadman, Wyoming Alpha ’69, is the Director of Scholarships and Fellowships for Tau Beta Pi, and oversees the application and review process for the hundreds of awards offered each year. Dr. Steadman has served as a TBP chapter advisor for more than three decades, first at the University of Wyoming and currently at the University of South Alabama, and was named the 2005 Tau Beta Pi National Outstanding Advisor. She holds a B.S. in civil engineering from the University of Wyoming and an M.A. in mathematics from the University of Denver. Dr. Steadman earned a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Wyoming in 1994. In addition to Tau Beta Pi, she is a member of Mortar Board and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies.
